Case Study: Review of Doug’s pension arrangements and advice about residential care

In each of our case studies, we highlight a specific issue or topic that our advisers have helped clients to manage. We also show how working with a trusted financial adviser provides continuity and peace of mind for our clients.

In this case study, we look at how a review of pension arrangements led to greater visibility for Doug. The client adviser relationship was solidified when Doug needed help making sense of residential care home fees for his mother-in-law.

What first prompted you to seek financial advice?

I’ve had financial advice for a few decades now but in the run up to retirement I realised that I was running about five pension funds all with different providers. I didn’t really feel like I had a grip on what my overall situation was and whether I could afford to retire or not.

I had some questions about the benefits and the logic of consolidating my pensions. Based on the assessment and the advice of my adviser, I transferred my various pensions to a different provider with an active and progressive approach.

How has the advice conversation moved on and evolved?

My adviser’s help was also invaluable when my mother-in-law was taken ill and spent an extended period in hospital and then into end-of-life care.

Happily, she recovered and was then transferred to residential care. I don’t think we would have coped without the support and the network that our adviser provided to us at that time. We had no idea about how paying for residential care works and it was such a stressful time, made less stressful by the care and support we received from our adviser.
