Case Study: Ongoing advice around retirement and later life changes for Elizabeth

In each of our case studies, we highlight a specific issue or topic that our advisers have helped clients to manage. We also show how working with a trusted financial adviser provides continuity and peace of mind for our clients.

In this case study, we look at how early retirement prompted an in-depth assessment of Elizabeth’s situation and how ongoing advice since then has helped her to navigate later life changes.

We found that the adviser was great at explaining things on our level and making sure we understood how different elements of financial planning and advice joined up and related to each other in the overall scheme of things.

What prompted you to seek financial advice?

My husband decided to take early retirement, prompted by ill health. At the same time the children were starting to leave home, and we both felt we needed a clear view of what we had and where, and how things were looking for us in the short, medium and long term and understand the level of security that we would enjoy with a reduced financial dependence from our children and being able to pay the mortgage off.

What, in particular, has your adviser helped you with?

My husband was himself a financial services professional and he felt that we needed a robust understanding of our affairs and to know what the best thing to do going forward would be to secure our financial security over the long term. He wanted the reassurance of having our house in order, so to speak.

What was the advice process like?

Initially, it was all about information gathering. We found that the adviser was great at explaining things on our level and making sure we understood how different elements of financial planning and advice joined up and related to each other in the overall scheme of things.

I cannot stress how important it is to find the right person as well as the right company to trust with your financial affairs.

What came next?

We had just moved to a new house when my husband passed away, We used a local solicitor to deal with the Will and probate, and our financial adviser was great at assisting with the whole process – working alongside the solicitor and also rearranging things into my name and making sure that I had everything in the right place and under the right structure.

What made the whole experience stand out?

I really like the fact that our adviser always comes to the house, as I find the face-to-face element so reassuring. We have regular email or phone contact in between. We have been discussing Inheritance Tax Planning (IHT) and making sure that my Will and Power of Attorney (PoA) are up to date and fit for purpose.

The rapport and trust that I have with my adviser is also important to me, I am not financially minded and, until his passing, my husband dealt with that side of things. Now it is just me, I find it so helpful to have someone who can explain things on my level and be patient with me.

I also trust in my adviser doing the right thing by me, rather than acting solely in the best interests of the company they work for. Personal integrity is important to me, and I cannot stress how important it is to find the right person as well as the right company to trust with your financial affairs.
