Case study: Mario’s retirement preparation

In each of our case studies, we highlight a specific issue or topic that our advisers have helped clients to manage. We also show how working with a trusted financial adviser provides continuity and peace of mind for our clients.  In this case study, we look at how ill health led to preparing for retirement and an eventual early retirement. The rapport and trust in the adviser were critical and a much-needed source of relief for our client.

I had so much peace of mind knowing and could leave at a time of my choosing and that my affairs were well planned out in advance.

What prompted you to seek financial advice?

I was diagnosed with a cancer called Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia (CML) in 2018 and was subsequently diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. Both are now happily under control, but my ill health prompted me to take advice with a view to retiring early.

I had a few pensions and was seeking a way to retire, knowing I couldn’t continue the physically demanding storeman job much longer. I also provided care for my wife, mother, and father, all of whom had health issues.

I searched online because I wanted somebody local to me that I could trust, that had positive reviews and was FCA authorised. I also wanted a company I could trust and that other people rated highly in terms of providing a personal and tailored service, as opposed to broad-brush solutions.

What has your adviser helped you with?

I wanted to delve into the pension side and work out a plan for when to retire and how to use the funds I had accumulated. I ended up working a few more years all the while knowing that I had retirement plans in place and set up to go once I resigned.

I retired in 2023, and Chris immediately put into action what we had discussed and agreed on.

I had so much peace of mind knowing and could leave at a time of my choosing and that my affairs were well planned out in advance.

I had too much on myself to deal with it, and I just wanted someone to take the stress away. I felt an immediate connection with Chris, and I felt like he really understood and empathised with my situation.

What was the advice process like?

At my request Chris and I met virtually. This was due to the amount of back and forth between the hospital, not just for me, but for other family members too. It just felt easier that way.

I had too much on myself to deal with it, and I just wanted someone to take the stress away. I felt an immediate connection with Chris, and I felt like he really understood and empathised with my situation.

Chris guided me all through it and gave me all the correct paperwork at the time that I needed it for me and my wife to sign. It was no stress, and I felt so comfortable with the process and the person.

What made the whole experience stand out?

I felt looked after. I felt that somebody was working for me and was on my side when it came to finances, and this was such a nice feeling amid turmoil that was going on at the time health wise.

What’s next?

My health issues are under control but being constantly monitored by the hospital. I’m ready to start talking about Inheritance Tax now the time is right, and I will have no hesitation in putting my trust into Chris. I feel like he understands my needs and will go the extra mile to give me advice that is tailored to me and my specific situation, and I really value that, alongside his extensive knowledge of course.
